چکیده

The origin of X-ray Flashes (XRFs) is still a mystery and several models have been proposed. To disentangle among these models, an important observational tool is the measure of the XRF distance scale, so far available only for a few of them.

A Deep Search with Hst for Late Time Supernova Signatures in the Hosts of Xrf 011030 and Xrf 020427

X-ray Flashes (XRFs) are, like Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), thought to signal the collapse of massive stars in distant galaxies. Many models posit that the isotropic equivalent energies of XRFs are lower than those for GRBs, such that they are visible from a reduced range of distances when compared with GRBs. Here we present the results of two epoch Hubble Space Telescope imaging of two XRFs. These...

Given the paucity of empirical constraints, the nature of the newly-recognized phenomena called X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) has been an open question. However, with the recent detections of radio and X-ray afterglow it is finally possible to study the largeand small-scale environments of XRFs. We present Chandra, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and Keck observations of the fields of XRFs 011030 and 0204...

Spectral Characteristics of X-ray Flashes compared to Gamma-Ray Bursts

X-ray flashes (XRFs) are a new type of fast transient source observed with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Cameras (WFC) at a rate of about four per year. Apart from their large fraction of 2–26 keV X-rays, the bulk properties of these events are similar to those of classical gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). By investigating the wideband spectra of ten events detected in common with WFC and BATSE, we explore t...

Rebrightening of XRF 030723: Further Evidence for a Two-Component Jet in Gamma-Ray Burst

Optical afterglows from two-component jets under various configurations are investigated numerically. Generally, the light curve is characterized by a rapid rebrightening when the observer is off-axis with respect to the narrow component, with the amplitude and peak time depending on detailed parameters. We further show that the optical afterglow of XRF 030723, especially its notable and rapid ...

On the nature of X-Ray Flashes in the SWIFT era

Aims. X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) are soft gamma-ray bursts whose nature is not clear. Their soft spectrum can be due to cosmological effects (high redshift), an off-axis view of the jet or can be intrinsic to the source. We use SWIFT observations to investigate different scenarios proposed to explain their origin. Methods. We have made a systematic analysis of the afterglows of XRFs with known redshi...
